MEMBERSHIP GRADE

ORDINARY

Ordinary membership of the Institute may be awarded to an applicant who holds an approved qualification of the Institute's Intermediate Diploma or National Diploma (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology.

OR

National Diploma (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology or its equivalent obtained from accredited Polytechnic/College of Technology.

STUDENT

Student membership of the Institute may be awarded to an applicant who holds SSCE, NECO, or G.C.E. ?O' Level pass in at least four subjects including Mathematics, English Language and any two relevant Science subjects. The applicant shall in addition be pursuing a professional course in Science Laboratory Technology using laboratories and facilities approved by the Council of the Nigerian Institute of science laboratory technology.

ASSOCIATE

Associate membership of the Institute may be awarded to an applicant who holds a BSc/BTech or HND in Science Laboratory Technology as stated respectively above. Associate members are eligible to use the designatory letters AISLT.

FELLOW

Fellowship of the Institute is the highest grade of corporate membership and it indicates a high level of achievement and responsibility within the profession. Application for fellowship can only be made by a corporate member who has been in good standing for at least five years. Fellows use the designatory letters FISLT.

FELLOWSHIP REGULATIONS

Application for fellowship grade must be made on the appropriate form available at the Institute's secretariat or downloaded from here. Prospective applicant must submit conclusive evidence of having attained appropriate educational and professional standards. This is normally achieved by submitting to the fellowship committee an approved research thesis or dissertation in the candidate's area of specialization, supervised by a PhD holder and not less than position of a senior lecturer or equivalent in a recognized institution. In addition candidates must submit other documents such as detailed curriculum vitae, publications in the scientific journals of which the candidate is at least a co-author, and extra curricular activities. In exceptional cases fellowship may be awarded by reason of the applicant having acquired many years of scientific and technical expertise and not less than principal technologist position. The above information is only a broad outline of fellowship procedure and an applicant is advised that before commencing research or activities which are intended to support an application for fellowship to obtain from the Registrar the application guidelines.

UPGRADING

Any ordinary or student member may apply for upgrading. Applicants for upgrading must do so in the appropriate form obtainable from the secretariat giving details of additional qualifications and experience gained since being awarded their present grades. Ordinary members can also apply for upgrading to associate membership when they acquire HND/BSc.

BRANCHES AND INTEREST GROUPS

It is the policy of Council to encourage the formation of branches with their own officers and committees at state or institutional levels to cater for the scientific, technical and socio-cultural needs of their members. Each branch may receive financial and other assistance from Council and are entitled to arrange seminars, symposia, and similar functions from which the branch can derive further income. Members interested in the formation of a branch or group are advised to request for guidelines on the formation of a branch from the secretariat. Further information can also be obtained from the office of the Registrar.
