Multi-purpose Science Laboratory (NISLT-MSL)

Preamble

The Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) was established by Act 12 of 2003 of the National Assembly and made a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. The Institute hitherto known as the Nigerian Institute of Science Technology (NIST) was first founded in 1971.

The core mandate of the Institute is to “advance science laboratory technology profession”. The Institute is to ensure through its registered members, effective and efficient management and administration of institutional and industrial laboratories inNigeria. The Institute is also required to conduct research in all areas of science and technology.

The Institute’s vision is “to cause rapid technological development of the nation through science laboratory technology” while the mission is “to sustain science and technology delivery through efficient, productive and ethical science laboratory practice in institutional, research and private laboratories   throughout the country”.

In order to fulfil its mandate, the Institute has put in place human and infrastructural resources such as the establishment of a Multipurpose Science Laboratory (MSL) at its Secretariat,Ibadan,OyoState. The laboratory is equipped with a wide range of equipment to provide an efficient and effective laboratory services for the general public, scientists, researchers, industries, farmers, exporters and students.  The facilities at the MSL is also assisting in science practical instructions and training of both secondary and tertiary institutions, as well as serving as a centre for the training and retraining of scientists and technologists in some specialized areas of science and technology. Also, the laboratory in collaboration with international laboratories is providing back-up analysis in products development for exports in meeting international trade requirements. 

The MSL is categorized into two main sections covering biological and chemical techniques. In the meantime, the major equipment available for services include:

  • Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS),
  • Flame Photometer, (FL)
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatography, (HPLC)
  • Amino Acid Analyser, (AAA)
  • Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectrophotometer, (FTIR)
  • UV-Visible Spectrophotometers, (UV-VIS SPEC)
  • Photomicrography,
  • ELISA Microplate Reader and
  • Foss Kjeltec Analyser

Plans are on to acquire more of the equipment which include:

  • Gas Chromatography – MS
  • Soxtech Machine
  • Fibertech Machine
  • Mass Spectrophotometer
  • PCR and accessories
  • Scanning electron microscope
  • Ultra-centrifuge, etc.

The ultimate aim is to make the laboratory centres of excellence to enable it contribute meaningfully to the technological development of the country.

To support the laboratory is a virtual library, being developed to have collections of materials and information stored in digital formats linked to other similar libraries both within and out side the country.

The Management of the laboratory is under a Director, supervising a cream of scientists and technologists who have been trained internally and externally in various relevant laboratory techniques.

The laboratory has a main section with specialized equipment housed in four different cubicles. There are also preparatory, inoculating, incubating and wash-up rooms. With the facilities available the following services can be offered:

  • Identification and characterization of some microorganisms
  • Microbiological analysis of water and food products
  • Detection of Mycotoxins in food samples
  • Photomicrography
  • Genetic studies
  • Forensic studies
  • Genotyping
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis
  • Serological typing
  • Biochemical studies of microorganism

 

The Chemical Laboratory

This laboratory has a main central section adequate to accommodate about eighty persons on bench work. There are four side cubicles housing different types of analytical equipment, earlier listed. The following analyses can be performed.

  • Seafood/Alcoholic analysis.
    • Total Volatile Nitrogen (TVN)
    • Sodium Chloride determination
    • Alcohol content in juices, wines and spirits.
  • Oils and Fat.
    • Iodine value
    • Peroxide value
    • Acid value
    • Rancidity.
  • Water and Sewage analysis.

Supporting Facilities

The Institute has a standby 250KVA Generator to ensure uninterruptible power supply. There is also a borehole connected to overhead tanks to ensure continuous flow of water to the laboratory. Aware of the hazards associated with the laboratory services, appropriate safety gadgets have been installed at strategic positions. 

 

Laboratory Safety

The laboratory pays serious attention to the safety of personnel, users and the environment.

Biohazard waste container with appropriate autoclave for biohazards; Terrazzo floor mounted with fume cupboard, smoke detectors, emergency safety shower and fire extinguishers are in place.

 

Accomplishments to date include:

  • Availability of standardized facilities for range of laboratory services in chemical and biological technique
  • Ensuring that clients needs are fully understood and met
  • Continually maintaining, improving and developing the Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Conduct of training workshops on laboratory techniques for scientists and technologists from all over the country.
  • Delivering efficient prompt quality services within client’s time frame
  • Rendering support to institutions and organizations on laboratory equipment management and maintenance.
