TRAINING

Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is one of the strategic Ministries of the Federal Government. Its key mandate is to formulate, monitor, coordinate, acquire and adapt scientific and technological infrastructure, policies and services for national development. It has nineteen Parastatals including NISLT that contribute to the fulfillment of the various aspects of this mandate.

Professional Training in Science Laboratory Technology Historically, Science Laboratory Technology Programme (SLTP) has been offered in some Universities in Nigeria over the years. The programme originated in the early fifties as a training programme at the University of Ibadan and was certified by the City and Guilds of London in conjunction with the Institute of Science and Technology of United Kingdom.

In 1984, when the City and Guilds of London withdrew from conducting the examinations for Overseas candidates, the Nigerian Institute of Science Technology (NIST) took up the responsibility for conducting the examinations in science laboratory technology in Nigerian Universities leading to the award of Intermediate and Final Diplomas of three (3 years) and two (2 years) duration respectively.

The initial concept of the programme was an in-service training programme producing in-house science technologists for the science-based laboratories in the universities. The success of the programme led to its rapid expansion in the late eighties with almost all Federal Universities adopting the programme. The products of the programme gained prominence in secondary and tertiary institutions, research institutes, petrochemical industries, food industries and private laboratories etc all over the country, contributing positively to the national economy. On record, about twenty-two Universities participated in running the SLTP in the country

The need for a new direction in the SLT training programme informed the conversion of the SLTP to degree programmes in the Universities in 2003. So far, about seven universities have adopted the SLT degree programme. It is expected that more will follow suite. In the Polytechnic system science laboratory technology (SLT) is a popular programme at both the National and Higher National Diploma levels. The Institute is involved in collaboration with the NBTE in the accreditation of the programme.

The Institute as the regulatory body is proposing a series of professional examinations that will standardise the various trainings and certificates of science laboratory technology (SLT) practitioners.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The workshops will be conducted through a combination of lectures, discussions, case studies, practical and multimedia presentations.
